About Us: The Community Outreach
Mlanjeni has partnered with our church to provide theatrical art projects, focusing on S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, English, Art, Math) enrichment, The Enrichment Puppet Project will introduce the students to the art of puppetry through a series of classes ending in the creation of a work for stage. The staged work will be presented to the public along with a solo work by Mlanjeni. The Arts and Puppet Workshop will be a faith-based project for youth ages 3 - 12.
About the Artist
The Enrichment Puppet Project was coordinated by artist Mlanjeni Nduma of Mlanjeni Theater. Mlanjeni Nduma has been a professional puppeteer and storyteller since 1985 in the Delaware Valley. Studying and pursuing east African arts of puppetry, magical illusions and stories, Mlanjeni has traveled and performed in schools, libraries, and community centers throughout the Delaware Valley.
Goals of the Program:
- To introduce community children to the art of hand-and-rod puppetry through the creation of a performance
- To introduce the “concert party” style of writing a play
- To introduce the craft of creating puppets
- To introduce the art of performing with puppets on a stage
